Enjoy the Journey, Heaven Awaits

For Christmas we gave the baby a stroller for her own babies.  It took her less than a week to figure out she fits in her new dolly stroller.  Oh boy.
The last doll stroller we had (about 10yrs ago) was held together with massive amounts of duct tape by the end of its life (well, its life here.  Believe it or not, a kind grandma bought it on our garage sale, for her grandbabies to play with).  I imagine this one will be in the same shape within a matter of time.

You see, even though I know it won't last forever, or even a long time, this stroller is worth it, for the experience.  For the lessons it teaches, and the compassion & confidence it creates.

She's changing as a little mommy, as she uses this stroller.  She's independently taking her baby on walks across the house, saying 'so long' to us, and confidently going on her way, stopping every few feet to check on her "sweetie".

I pray each of you have times in your life that you go for what you want, even though you know it won't last forever.  Experience life.
Experience the joys, even knowing the end may not be your ideal ending (covered in duct tape, heart ache, whatever it may be).
Life is worth living.  Just as our old doll stroller had a life with that kind grandma, after it left here, there is life after our lives here on Earth.
Smile.
Enjoy the journey.
Heaven awaits.

Grandma's No Roll Sugar Cookies

Today my mom (granny) came over for a day of making Christmas goodies with the grandkids.

We used my late mother-in-law's recipe for these no roll sugar cookies.  My mother-in-law, Dorothy, was the real baker.  She spent each December making an assortment of cookies that really could put any local bakery to shame.

While we didn't get nearly as extravagant as she would've, I think our efforts today would have made her a little proud.

These cookies taste just fine how they are and are easy to store (& freeze) this way.
We are planning to let all the kids frost these at Christmas as an activity.

It will be super simple whip up a batch of frosting the day of the decorating.

Growing Grateful Kids: Even When You're Tired & it Doesn't Seem to Matter Much

Of all the Build-a-Bears in the house, the 7yr old suddenly needed this one tonight.
To be truthful, I thought about telling him to grow up & look for it in the morning.

Because really:
1. It was already a full hour or better past bedtime.
2. I had no idea where to even start looking for it, since we hadn't seen it for months. So why does he need it now? Right now.
3. He's plenty old enough to not need a stuffed animal.
4.  I was h-angry. So hungry it made me angry.
5. I was still trying to paint a canvas and didn't particularly want to be interrupted.

Instead though, I chose to offer compassion & sympathy to my hurting child.  I didn't really get it, but I scoured the house anyway. Fast.
The minutes went by and I wasn't having any luck.  I feared I had sold it on a garage sale...
Finally I found it in a basket under the toddler's crib.  Goal!
He was so grateful to hug his Buddy Bear again. I wish y'all could've seen the look I his face when he embraced that bear.

You found it!   Thank you mama! My buddy bear!

Recipe: Warm Coconut Cream Cheese Goo

I <3 warm satisfying sweets on cold wintery days.

This has been my go-to when I'm craving something nectarous & savory.

In a skillet, warm these things together until you can easily stir them up (don't worry about measurements, just use your own judgment):
Shredded Coconut
Cream Cheese
Almond Flour
Peanut Butter
Chocolate Chips
A little water
Oatmeal- I don't usually add this, unless I have to share with the kids, then I throw it in to bulk it up.

Does it look totally gross?  You betcha.  But TRUST ME, it tastes AMAAAAAZING.  How could you go wrong with coconut and chocolate?  You just can't!

{Sneak Peak} DIY Hot Cocoa Stand for Family Pictures

{Sneak Peak} I'm crazy excited about this hot cocoa stand my hubby built, for our family photo shoot.  The best part is that when I asked him to make it, he didn't even try to talk me out of it.

He's learning! haha

I pulled the idea off of Pinterest.  There were so many cute ones to choose from, but this is what we came up with.  We sort of used this design {click here} from Ana White to get us started.  Really you could make this just about any way you'd like.

We had a majority of this lumber leftover from other projects, so the cost was minimal.  I picked up most of the accessories from the dollar store or used things we had on hand already.  We spent a grand total of about $30 to pull this off.
Now, that's not including the new coats I picked up.  But hey, I had coupons at one store and used Cartwheel at the other! Honestly us 3 girls really needed nice dress coats anyway.

On Thanksgiving we got the stand out to give it a trial run.  All the cousins loved playing with it.  My super styling SIL & my momma helped me finalize our coordinating warm outfits.  Outdoor family photos in Iowa are pretty rare during the winter, but us crazies gave it a try anyway!

The actual photo-shoot day was super fun!  We had a young photographer and her mom (my friend) pose us, laugh with {and probably at us}, and capture some great memories that we'll have for a lifetime!

Here are my tips for pulling off an outdoor family photo session like this in the coooold winter:
1. DRESS WARM.  Hats and gloves kind of warm, okay?
2. Let the kids play.  Relax mama, the shots of them playing were the best.
3. Ask the kids how they want to pose.  You'll be surprised -or not- but their personality really comes out when they are free to move how they wish.
4. Bribe them with cookies.... then take more pictures!

I've been so excited to share some of these with you!  I'm glad I finally had a minute to sit down and compile these scribbles!  I hope you enjoyed the pictures, I know I sure did!

Ps.  If you don't have a Beverage Dispenser yet, I suggest you get one!  We love ours for when we are hosting company, either big groups or small.  We usually just put water in it with lemon and mint leaves, but the presentation is beautiful!  I bought one, and we received one as a gift; which was perfect because now we have one for upstairs and downstairs! Kids LOVE them!

AMAZON'S PRICE DROP POLICY

Christmas Shopping? Then you need to know this- AMAZON'S PRICE DROP POLICY: "If the price drops within 7 days of the delivery date on an item that was shipped and sold by Amazon, just contact Amazon and they'll refund you the price difference. So now you can shop a little more confidently".  -I LOVE ordering through Amazon.  As a homeschool mom we order tons of our books through there.  We also order so many household items, and fun things too; like our DVD player.

Our DVD player dropped in price by $25.15 since it arrived 4 days ago.  I simply requested a refund of the price difference and they quickly granted it!  Easy peasy!  Great customer service!

Delicious and Easy Pumpkin Dump Cake Recipe

This is right before it went in the oven- when I realized it didn't have the sugar!

Pumpkin Dump Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

1 box cake mix (yellow or spice)

1 (15oz) can Pumpkin

1 (12oz) can Evaporated Milk

3 Eggs

1 C . Sugar (white or brown)

1 tsp. Cinnamon

½ tsp. Salt

1 ½ C. Pecans or Almonds- Chopped

1-2 Sticks of Butter- Melted

Mix the pumpkin, evap. milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, & salt together.
Pour that creamy mixture into a 9x13 cake pan.
Sprinkle the cake mix over the top.
Drizzle butter over the cake mix.
Sprinkle nuts over the whole she-bang.
Bake at 350* for 50-55 minutes.

This recipe is pretty fool-proof.  This is good, since I don’t always read every step.  Like today, when I completely left the sugar out of one pan.  My dad is diabetic; I could say I did it on purpose and just serve it to everyone else with a scoop of ice cream.

Flakes of Fashion: Where Did All of These Scarves Come From??

So....There's a scarf situation going on over here... #slightscarfobsession

I don't even know where all of these came from, it's like they just appeared.  I'm totally okay with that though, I love them!

Shout out to my momma, who brought me back a soft pink scarf she picked up at a dollar store in Germany.  That has been my go-to scarf for 2+ years.  She has given me many of these and even made one of them!

#BrownieTheCat doesn't seem to mind, but I want these organized.  I think could fill a whole walk-in closet with just fashion accessories, & I'm really not that fashionable!  I can't imagine how many accessories some of you real fashionistas must own!

How do you ladies store your accessories??  Bonus points if you email in a picture!

Why I have the best dad ever

If you show up at my door at 8PM when it's pitch black & freezing cold, just to deliver a little something you picked up at the thrift store.... You earn the title of best.dad.ever!

**Check out my new (to me) heavy MARBLE TOP  dressers.  Yes, dresserS, 4 of them to be exact! {swoon} **

Of course, my dad really earned that 'best dad ever' title years ago.  This gesture last night was pretty  amazing though, don't you think? ;)
Can't wait to share with you what I do with these beauties.

#AlwaysOnGuard #ToughTopic

My oldest's personality can be described very simply like this: "compassionate & matter of fact/serious".  She genuinely cares about people & doesn't do fluff.  She doesn't understand analogies and is easily frustrated by them.  She's also a little ADD.

So when are watching a talk show & talking about snowboarding, then she suddenly springs questions like this on me... I just have to be prepared to give a straight answer.

"Mom you know how Ellen is gay?  Can she still go to Heaven?"

The short answer, your salvation has nothing to do with your sin.  And we ALL sin differently.  A sin is a sin and the worst of all would be not accepting Jesus at all or even refusing him.

I know it's much more complicated than this, but for now, we will leave it at that.

What tough questions have been thrown your way?  Were you prepared to answer them?

The Benefits of Being Strong-Willed (Part 2)

This post contains affiliate links. A Slightly Better Wife (Quincey B.) is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to amazon.com.

In my last post on being strong-willed I briefly talked about the conference I went to and what it meant to be strong willed.   I want to assure any of you strong willed women who are reading this that your personality type, when used correctly, is a gift from God.

This is NOT a character flaw, okay?  Just repeat that a few times before you move on.

I know not all my readers are married or even moms, or have lead a life even remotely similar to mine, so if you can’t relate to these examples try to brainstorm ways that your strong-willed personality has been a blessing to you.

Here are a few of my experiences:

I’ll start with when I was a teen working at a pizza place.  I had two different grown men who on separate occasions would come in and try to be overly friendly- but honestly downright weird with me.  Another trusted adult said these guys were harmless; ignore it, they’d been coming in for years.  They said I was overreacting; they weren’t interested in me, just off kilter.  Okay, whatever.

I believed that for a moment, even after I had a bible and blanket thrown at my feet as a sign of this 50-something’s love for me (this really made me afraid of and confused by Christianity.  People, it’s true that sometimes YOU are the only Jesus people may see.  Choose your words and actions wisely).  This one guy constantly came behind the counter and knelt at my feet to worship me and pray ‘with me’.  Practically every Saturday morning I’d get a visit from one of these two guys.  I called the cops so many times that summer.  I’m very thankful they always took me seriously and came to my rescue to scare him off.  After a few months though, I had enough.  I chose NOT to be passive and instead stood up for myself against these clearly mentally unstable people.  One of the men was later hauled off by the cops when he showed up at my work place one evening and threatened someone with a spear.  You read that right, a spear!  I thank God I wasn’t there and that no one was harmed.  I KNOW that being strong-willed probably saved my life that summer.

Back track a few years, I think I was in middle school.  I had an innocent crush on a kid who was in the same grade as one of my older brothers.  The kid knew this (because I called him all.the.time), and was a jerk to me in front of everyone else (I was 4 years younger.  That’s a big deal when you’re a boy in high school and a middle school girl likes you.  I get that now).  I cried big crocodile tears because he said he didn’t like me.  Once he had me alone he apologized and dropped his pants asking me to do things that I was NOT okay with doing.  I was like 12! I didn’t even want to kiss him, but would’ve been over the moon with just holding hands.

My strong-willed personality allowed me to give him a firm NO, a shove, and a threat that made him never EVER try anything like that again.  He still won’t make eye contact with me, and that was 16 years ago!

In my late teens early 20’s my strong-willed personality helped me be a good leader in the work place.  It led our team to higher efficiency.

As a young housewife my strong-willed personality being used selfishly caused the crash of one of the most fun friendships I ever had.  In retrospect I’m glad it happened.  It was best for both of us to no longer be friends.  But I so badly wish it wasn’t my fault and that I wasn’t the one carrying all the guilt of my actions causing so much pain and awkwardness among each other and our friends.  If I had used my personality correctly I could’ve set some firm boundaries that would’ve benefited both of us.  We could’ve slowly separated and remained friends instead of becoming instant enemies.

2 years ago the combination of me and our pediatrician both being strong willed, led to testing that determined our youngest daughter’s heart condition.

Being strong willed as a wife has led me to fight for my husband’s happiness and health.  It allowed me to stand by his side during a custody battle and not get weary or back down.  It allowed me to get him the care he needed when we found a lump on the back of his head.

The control of my strong-willed personality is what earned me the place standing over the operating table guiding the doctor as my husband had that lump removed for the second time, because it grew back.

You see the first time I wasn’t motivating the doctor to do it right, I was PUSHING the doctor and telling him how to do his job.  Now a part of me wants to point out that if this doctor would’ve listened to me, we wouldn’t have been back in for a second surgery.  As far as I know that’s all true and everything, but I wasn’t using my “power” for good, I was using it to be right.

This is probably way too late in the post to have this be very effective, but I need to tell you that being submissive, and honoring God by controlling your gift of being strong-willed DOES NOT MEAN that you need to endure any sort of abuse.

It simply means (I’m quoting this from the conference because I don’t want to summarize it and have it come across wrong):
“Submission is an attitude of the heart that says we want to show our love for Christ through the way we voluntarily place the goal of oneness within the marriage before our own selfish desires.” –Dr. Debbie Cherry

If you have read this and decided that you too are strong-willed, here’s what you can do:

For one, pray that God would show you how to use your personality for his glory.  Notice I’m not saying pray for God to change your spouse/kids so you don’t have to repeat yourself over and over.  Pray that YOU are changed.

Don’t freak out over every little thing, set some realistic expectations.

Stop making excuses.  “My mom raised me this way, so that’s why I yell and nag”.  “If you listened the first time I wouldn’t be yelling now”.

Begin to delegate out some of your duties.  You KNOW they won’t be done exactly to your liking, but just suck it up and say thank you anyway.  Praise is more effective than criticism.
I personally have decided I don’t care how my bath towels are folded, as long as I can find a clean one when I need it.  This was a huge release for me, as I’ve nagged about how bath towels need to be folded in thirds not quarters for about 8 years!  I even corrected my father-in-law for folding them wrong.  Who the heck complains about their father-in-law helping with laundry?  Some ungrateful woman using her strong-willed personality incorrectly, that’s who!  Never again!

Focus your heart and mind on the happiness and needs of others, not yourself.

And just for fun- STOP rearranging the food at every gathering you go to.  If someone wants a scotcheroo bar they’ll find it, even if it isn’t placed next to all the other desserts and in alphabetical order!  haha.  kidding.  kind of.

You Think I'm Strong-Willed? Whatever THAT Means!

There were only TWO other women at the conference with sparkle shoes.  One of them was Sally Baucke, the woman who taught me it's okay to wear sparkle shoes and find the joy in your life right where you are.  The other woman was like me, just trying to be as fashionable as Sally!

So you know that class on being a strong-willed wife that I shamefully admitted to signing up for?  It was GOOD!  Real good.

I sat right in the front row, because my fun-sized friend has trouble seeing over the heads in front of us when we aren’t in stadium seating.  She's adorable, and I am only teasing about her height... But see for yourself.

Isn't she cute?  She also LOVES Sally.  Someday I'd love to see the two of them preform a skit at Hearts at Home together!  They're both hilarious and have big heart for sharing Jesus.

Truthfully I found out in later sessions that even I  at 5’9” also have trouble seeing over the crowd ahead of me.
My friend and I  had the best seats in the house for this workshop.  God placed both of us there because we NEEDED it.  He knew it, and we discovered it!

I learned I AM strong-willed. I mean  I was pretty sure I was, but I didn't see how it was effecting my marriage until the workshop on Saturday.

We started off with taking a quiz and I scored 33 out of 40.   If I was even more honest with myself I probably would have scored a few points higher yet!

I didn’t really see my personality characteristics as a problem, until Dr. Debbie Cherry, our speaker, started explaining HOW other people view these traits.

Thankfully I also learned there are myths to what being strong-willed means.  I bought into all of the myths as a strong-willed person myself and for the people I feel are strong willed around me.

Being strong-willed doesn’t mean that you are a bad girl.  It doesn’t mean you’re automatically the big-B-word.

The problem comes when you don't use your gift of being SW'd correctly, you may come across as um... witchy.

We aren't all witchy though.  We're just passionate.  We love Jesus just the same as anyone else does; we just aren’t quiet about it.

We love the Proverbs 31 woman and we feel inspired by her, not intimidated by her.  This was really eye opening for me.  I have heard so many women talk about how impossible it is to imitate the Proverbs 31 woman.  They get really uncomfortable and even a little angry talking about her and how unrealistic she is.  I’ve never felt like that, I’ve always thought she was encouraging to me.

Some positive traits of being a SW'd woman are this:  Motivated, Passionate, Energetic, Charismatic, Confident, Independent and we are born leaders with BIG DREAMS.  These are NOT bad things at all.   I particularly like this list actually.

So yes, I am SW’d in that I will rearrange a food line to make it flow better (I’ll try to stop this, I swear it).  I didn’t even realize it was a problem until she spoke of it.  I’ve also rearranged restaurants to make them more conducive to conversation.  My family rolls their eyes when I do this.  I thought they were innocently giving me a hard time.  They probably weren’t.

The plus side is I’m also SW’d in that I am so passionate about marriage and helping others finding their self-worth that I will lay down my wants/needs to provide for others, because I feel so strongly about it.

I love passionately, just not quietly.  That truth was so freeing.

The next step is learning how to control this gift of being Strong-Willed.  My usual interruption is happening now (the baby waking up) I’ll post a part 2 when I can!  There are so many amazing qualities to being strong-willed, so I hope you will check back to hear more!

The speaker I’m referring to is Dr. Debbie Cherry and she has written a book called The Strong-Willed Wife: Using Your Personality to Honor God And Your Husband {affiliate link}.

Who am I? Love Your Life

This weekend I am attending a Christian women's conference a couple hours from home called Hearts at Home.

At this point in my life, as in right now-today, I feel like I'm doing alright in the areas of motherhood and marriage, but I am lacking in finding my true identity.  After talking it over with Mr. Awesome, and running it by a good friend (so many times, I'm sorry, and thank you guys for putting up with me!) I've decided it's best to be focusing my workshop selections on bettering me as Quincey.  Not as mom, not as wife, not as daughter, etc.

I have gone to Hearts at Home for many years and always take the mommy/wife classes and learn SO much. They have really helped shape me.  So if you're reading this and that's the type you signed up for, I assure you- you have made a good choice!  All the workshops are amazing.  Honestly.

One of the workshops I signed up for is titled "Could Someone Please Remind Me Who I Am?!"
Check out the description of this class

"You probably feel like you are juggling a lot of roles – mommy, wife, volunteer, friend, daughter… Beneath all the things you DO, have you ever wondered in a quiet moment (if you ever have one) who you really ARE? Be prepared to hear a message on identity that you wouldn’t expect from your average psychologist. Juli will help you:
  • Understand why the search for identity consumes you.
  • Recognize the difference between the world’s definition of you and what the Bible says.
  • Recognize why believing God about who you are is so difficult.
  • Get out of the rat race of trying to prove yourself.
  • Take practical steps to be rooted in who you really are."

I am looking forward to sharing with you what I learn when I get back! I'm sure I'll Instagram my experience along the way!

Would you please pray safe travels over my group and that we all will connect and be refreshed?  Thank you.

Oh and to be TOTALLY honest here- I am also taking one teeny-tiny (full-length) class called "The Strong-Willed Wife".  You know, just because that's all they had left or something.... and, um, because my husband encouraged me to give it a try.

Church Family: Feeling Disconnected? Be The Change You Want to See~Part 2

This is part 2 in a series on my feeling discontent and disconnected within my church family.  You can skim Part 1 Here.

So here I am, on my quest to be the change I wanted to see.

I thought about changing churches.  I really did.  I even had my new church all picked out, but then someone complained about their pastor being "fake".  I knew my pastors were real and I appreciated that.  Now granted, this was just an opinion, but it did shift my thinking.

The other problem I had was my husband is active in the church and serves on a couple different boards.  You can't just up and leave when you're doing that.  Oh and he didn't want to go anywhere, that was kind of a big road block.

I decided running away from my problems weren't going to fix them. Great thought, right?  Yeah, I know, very original.    I also decided that my thinking was so misconstrued that I didn't actually KNOW what my problem really was.

My first step was to pray that God would clearly define for me my problems and make it clear for me to find a way to fix them.

I prayed every door would slam shut and that the only open door would be the one I needed to walk through to fix this.  I prayed the light would be shining bright and I would just know it was right.

First I had to identify my problem.  One of them was as a mom with a baby in the pew, I had NO IDEA what the sermon was about.  I’ll be honest, most weeks I couldn’t even quote one word the pastor said except maybe “welcome”, and that’s just a guess.  Even if my baby was sitting perfectly still (hey, it happened once!)  I just couldn’t center my heart to be fully there.

I had to adjust this by putting my sweet girl in the nursery.  Now this comes natural for most people, but not for me.  It was a stretch to trust someone else to care for my child without having a clue what was going on.  My husband and I also had different opinions on this at different times, but never the same opinion at the same time.  You ladies know what I’m talking about, don’t you?  By God’s grace we settled with trying it for a few weeks and if it absolutely didn’t work out, we would just reevaluate.
It’s been about 6 weeks now, and it’s going well.  Sometimes she goes straight to the nursery; sometimes she “earns” her ticket there by being a normal obscene toddler and too fidgety for church.

The other issue was I “knew” everyone, but didn’t really “know” anyone.  I desire deeper relationships.  This is new.  I’m normally just fine with being acquaintances and not knowing people too personally.

God has changed me here.  Not everyone likes it, and I don’t always even like it, but it is just my reality right now.  I’m embracing it.  I care so deeply about people.  All people.  People I have never met, people I’ve known forever, people I swore I didn’t like, people I was paranoid that didn’t like me, really.all.people.  I love them all.    Love.them.   This comes with a cost (any Once Upon a Time fans here?  I'll tell you all about it someday when  I get it all figured out).

In an effort to get to know people better my husband and I started a “hang out” small group at our church during our kids’ Promiseland (Bible School).   This not only got us talking with the people in the group, but it’s also encouraged me to invite other people in, & to talk to more people in the hallways.  It made church feel like home.  They let us move furniture to accommodate our group.  If moving furniture was a love language, it’d be in my top 3.  ;)

I am working with a couple ladies in the church on a kitchen remodeling project.  Working with women who have experienced more years than I, and have been in the church longer was such a blessing.   Their wisdom as well as their frequent requested trips to the church helped me feel welcome.  I want to share more of this with you, but that will be another post.

We started eating dinner at church.  Our church offers a free will offering meal each week.  It used to seem overwhelming to get all the kids there, fill their plates, set them down and hope they ate without complaining or spilling.  Or both and embarrassing me terribly.

Now I look forward to our Wednesday evening meals.  It’s my little break from the kitchen.  Young moms NEED this, and I’m so thankful our church offers it.  It spiritually fills me to enjoy a meal prepared by others while I fellowship with my church family.  I try to worry less about the kids eating perfectly, and worry more about the person sitting across from me feeling welcome.   I try to plant a seed of familiarity in them while we eat together and later when I see them they are no longer a stranger, but friend who with time, will grow to be family.

These little steps have helped me feel more content within the church walls.  Sermons are hitting me hard when I'm not wrestling with a toddler.  I'm taking notes that I can reread and research throughout the week.   I'm learning things I never knew.

These are all good things for helping me feel connected.  I have so many ideas for ways to help our church grow and I’m finally feeling confident that I am the right person to help bring these changes.  I NEVER thought I’d be saying that, but that’s just how God works.  When we let him, he moves us in great big ways.

Girl Talk: The 5 Minute Comparison Game

Fact: I want to keep improving myself and everything around me for as long as I’m living.

One way I work to improve myself is by spending time in my Bible.  Now that doesn’t always mean my actual bible.  That often times means using my Bible app for 5 or 10 minutes (usually just 5) while I wait for whatever it is I’m waiting for: food to cook, a kid to bring up their laundry, everyone to get to the couch for movie night, a pot to boil, etc.

As easy as it is to sneak in Bible time just 5 minutes at a time, it’s also equally as easy to let corrupt thoughts enter our minds, just 5 minutes at a time.

The thoughts I’m thinking of specifically are those of comparison.
Let me take a minute to admit that I'd like to think I’m writing this for all of you and that I don’t have a problem here.  That’s just not true though, I do have a problem.

5 minutes on Pinterest suddenly makes me feel like I need to paint something or tear out a wall in my home to open things up a bit, because well, it looked good on Pinterest!  Ugh, OMG, my home isn’t good enough!  I am so embarrassed to live HERE.

5 minutes in a conversation with a friend about how they talked to one of their friends and all of a sudden I’m feeling like OUR friendship isn’t a true friendship.   I mean how could be?  Because everything they just said makes it sound like they are so much closer with the other friend than they are with me.  Besides, that other friend finds out everything way before I do.  Hmm, I must not be that important to her!  I must be boring because her conversation with so-and-so sounds so much deeper/better/more fun than this one we are having! I give up trying.

5 minutes with my nose in a fashion magazine and I’m no longer in love with the clothes in my closet that I loved so much the day I bought them, or even yesterday for that matter!  I am horrible at fashion, just horrible! And I'm fat, but I'll worry about that when I'm done eating this eggless cookie dough..  OH brother, I need a stylist!  Maybe I’ll get one of those online stylists to do the shopping for me and send me things that will make me look amazing.  Yeah, that'll fix it!
Followed by:  Wait… I can’t afford that.  Oh how I hate that ALL our money goes so quickly each month.  All my friends are so perfect and rich because they NEVER have these thoughts or struggles like I do! Oh their husbands must make $XXX,XXX for a salary.. and it goes ON AND ON AND ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN.

Girls, I don’t always feel like this, but there are times I do.  It happens little by little.  5 minutes at a time.  I think you probably feel like this too occasionally.  Maybe we could just pray for each other to be content and happy with ourselves and our current situations, whatever they are?  God Knows.

Little by little, just 5 minutes at a time, my bible tells me:

Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Ephesians 2:8 AMP
For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favor) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God.

Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
